Trauma Therapy

Trauma can shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Whether you experienced a single overwhelming event or ongoing difficult circumstances, the effects can linger, affecting your relationships, your sense of safety, and your daily life.

At Blue Rock Psychology, we offer compassionate, evidence-based trauma therapy to help you process what happened, reduce distressing symptoms, and reclaim your life.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma isn’t defined by the event itself, but by how your nervous system responded to it. What’s traumatic for one person may not be for another, depending on many factors, including age, support, and previous experiences.

Types of trauma we work with:

  • Single-incident trauma: accidents, natural disasters, witnessing violence, sudden loss
  • Complex trauma (CPTSD): ongoing abuse, neglect, or unsafe environments, particularly in childhood
  • Relational trauma: betrayal, abandonment, or chronic invalidation in important relationships
  • Religious/spiritual trauma: harmful experiences within religious contexts
  • Medical trauma: frightening medical experiences or diagnoses

Common effects of trauma include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened
  • Feeling on edge, easily startled, or hypervigilant
  • Emotional numbness or difficulty feeling positive emotions
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Shame, guilt, or self-blame
  • Difficulty regulating emotions
  • Negative beliefs about yourself (“I’m broken,” “It was my fault”)

How We Treat Trauma

Trauma therapy requires safety, patience, and approaches designed specifically for trauma healing:

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFIT)

EFT for individuals helps you process traumatic emotions in a safe therapeutic relationship. We work at your pace, helping you access and integrate difficult experiences without becoming overwhelmed.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is particularly effective for complex trauma. We work with the “parts” of you that carry trauma and the protective parts that developed to cope, helping your whole internal system heal.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

ART uses eye movements and visualization to process traumatic memories quickly, often reducing distress significantly in just a few sessions.

What Therapy For Trauma Looks Like

We never rush trauma work. Your therapist will:

  • Establish safety. We build trust and ensure you have coping resources before processing traumatic material.
  • Understand your story. We learn about your experiences at a pace that feels manageable for you.
  • Process trauma carefully. Using appropriate techniques, we help you work through traumatic memories and their effects.
  • Integrate and move forward. As the past loses its grip, you develop a new relationship with your history and your future.
